By Jamison Vanden Einde
May 5, 2008

Cool temperatures in the evening and during the day has not sparked much rise in water temperatures and thus, not much has changed within the report from last week.

Water temperatures are still hovering between 40 - 50 degrees F right now, so most of the pan fish that are being found are either in water between 2 - 5' or holding in 10 - 25' of water, staging either right on the bottom of the "first break" or just off of it, closer to a basin.

Most of the fish in shallow right now will be 'gills, so if it's crappies you're after, in most cases, you'll still want to look in the deeper water first. Searching for these fish with small crank baits like a Salmo Hornet or beetle spin is one option, but you can also pitch a jig and plastic or minnow if you're looking to work an area a little slower. Also, when fishing the deeper water, don't forget to at least try up in the water column. A lot of fish that were in shallow water right before the ice went out will travel and stage out in the deeper water but stay in that shallower depth. If you find a school of these fish, in most cases, they should remain active as long as you can stay on top of them.

REMINDER: It's time to purchase your licenses for 2008!
