Devils Lake
May 5, 2008
Cold fronts this past week and a lack of moving water have resulted in a slower start to open water fishing this year. A warmer forecast should help things pick up as water temps increase. The one plus this past week was a new lake record walleye caught by Travis Mettler of Concrete ND. The walleye weighed a whopping 13lbs 3 ounces. Congratulations Travis.

Metro Area Minnesota
May 5, 2008
Metro lakes are ice-free! Water is cold, though. Crappies are starting to move to the shallows, and the bite is getting started. Some sun and warm weather this week should make for a good crappie bite for opening weekend. Don't forget about the crappies if cold water has the walleyes slow on the opener.

Bemidji area
May 5, 2008
As of right now, there is not much to report. All of the lakes except the really small ones are locked up in ice. Many of the larger lakes may not be fishable by the fishing opener, May 10th. Several boat accesses are in need of repair and work will not be done on these until the ice is out.

As this report is being written, the ice is deteriorating by the hour. Above freezing temperatures and ever changing winds has been the enemy of the ice.

West Central WI

All area waters are ice free, but the rivers are running high. The Mississippi and St. Croix rivers are very high, which will cause the St. Croix River to be slow-no wake speed for boaters river-wide for the May 3 walleye opener.

Northern WI
May 5, 2008
Spring conditions have been a little less than ideal for those who are looking to get out and enjoy a warm spring weekend. Last weekend started out with wind, snow, and cold temperatures...it is looking like this weekend is going to be similar. Birds continue to filter into the northland. Pine, and palm warblers, brown thrasher, ruby-crowned kinglets, tree swallows yellow-bellied sapsuckers are just some of the birds that have been observed.

In Sheboygan, fishing on the Sheboygan and Pigeon rivers has been slow, as well as off the piers. Boaters fishing in 10 to 30 feet of water between the Sheboygan harbor and the power plant have been catching fair numbers of brown trout.

South Central WI

Turkey hunters have been met with precipitation for most of the last week, limiting the amount of time some hunters are willing to spend in the field. Regardless of the rain, the turkeys were still strutting and gobbling in full force. The Pecatonica River is still out of its banks and the Sugar River is still high, but both rivers are on there way down, hopefully in time for the game fish opener.

Mississippi Pool 4
April 24, 2008
This month has been awesome for very large walleye. Many fish have been tipping the scales at 10pounds (hard to believe but true). There was a period of about five to seven days were the bites were minimum but the bite turn into huge walleye, this was definitely a period were you didn't want to miss a single bite.

Great weather this last weekend brought out lots of perch anglers. Reports all around the lake are pretty much the same. Lots of people not so many perch. There down there but seem to be very inactive. Everyone I talked to had a few jumbos but pretty slow.

January 29, 2008
What a weekend! With the warm temperatures the Ice Fishing Extravaganza went terrific. Record crowds hit Gull lake in search of a big fish. The lucky winner landed a 5 pound walleye and drove home in a brand new truck. It was a fun weekend for everyone. The fishing was a little slow during the first part of the week but really took off when the weather warmed up again. We had some awesome walleye fishing on Gull from Thursday through the weekend.

BWCA and Ely Area

Gunflint lake. Where do I start. The weather was stupendous for Opener, more then a laker nut could ask for. Light snow and light winds with temps that never dipped below 19 at night and highs in the mid to upper twenties. So there we were, Reefraker, Rick, Harvey Lee, and myself. We arrived at the Holly Laker Place that is Gunflint Trail on a lake with same name. On the drive up the trail we saw the scorched trees from the summers forest fire. Still standing, black in color on a backdrop of white that is deep in depth and winter. Still there were trees untouched by flames as though a border was penciled in. It was good to be there again.

Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids
January 9, 2008
Ice fishing season is in full swing, and the fishing has been good. Not too many lakes are seeing vehicle traffic due to snow, but the warm weather has reduced the amount of snow so may be some cold weather will open some lakes up to driving. Panfishing has been very good with reports of big gills, and slabs falling victim.

Upper Red Lake

As we feel the affect of a nasty cold front and easterlies for three days we look forward to soon warming temps and steady barometers. Anglers are coming in with mixed reports and mixed feelings about the infamous Upper Red Lake and all of her twisted ways. The anglers putting in pure fishing time are coming in very successful, card players and dice rollers are not doing so well.

St. Croix River
November 13, 2007
The mild weathered November we have been experiencing has extended the fall bite, which still remains good. The river under went a very nice water level rise a couple weeks ago, but now the river is at the normal pool level of 675. The river may actually be a half foot higher, but for all intents and purposes, the river is where it normally is this time of year. The temperature sensor on my depth finder is reading 158 degrees, so that is broken, I do not have the exact reading, but I do know the water is much warmer that it usually is during mid November, but not 158. After the high waters abated the river is still stained, upon finishing the trip for the day and after pulling out the fish, I saw my livewell looked like it was filled with gallons of A & W root beer minus the fizz. The water is not carrying much sediment, so it is not dirty, just stained.

Grand Rapids
July 18, 2007
It’s the 3rd week in July and Winnie is still producing lots of nice stringers. It is getting harder to get the fish to bite out there on the humps but if you work it over and over with the right bait you will get bit. I have been using bigger leeches and crawlers that are in good shape, now is not the time to have crappy bait. The fish have a smorgasbord of food down there and you need to make them want yours. The humps and bars have been the most productive for me in the 20-24 ft of water.
