WAHOOO!!!!!!! ITS PERCH'N TIME!!!!
As the days begin to get longer the Big Winnie perch are just beginning their staging for their spring spawn. During this time you will find these fish in the shallow water. As the unlaid eggs begin to mature the jumbo female perch require much more food. This is a great time for the fisherman to have the thrill of a life time.
Each year we hope that we have enough ice to be there when this major feeding frenzy begins. This is our year!! Like a dream come true, the ice on Big Winnie is perhaps the best that has been seen this late in the season for several years. Currently there is approx. 30-32" of crystal clear hard ice. The snow has dropped enough to allow 4X4 trucks to move around off-road again. Because of the extreme cold nights that we have had lately there is no slush on top of the ice to contend with.
What to bring....a BIG bucket and the real desire to have some fun. You will also need a light to ultra light jig rod spooled with 4 lbs. monofilament line. My best luck has been with a Scenic Tackle Perch colored Jigging Spoon tipped with the head of a minnow or with a couple of wax worms. When the bite is as intense as it gets during this period of time you want to get your lure back down the hole as quickly as possible. Often times during this transition period I will pinch the barbs of my hooks down for easier release of the fish.
Look for these fish to be in the 6-10 feet of water. Begin in the deeper water and just keep moving in until you have located the school that you are looking for. If you find yourself only catching small fish just move a few feet and you will soon be on bigger fish.
This is a great outing for the novice fisherman as well as the veterans. Judds resort has complete accommodations for the later season including a "go anywhere Argo" This machine is an excellent machine for very late in the season when car and truck traffic is not possible. Give them a call and they will be happy to help make this an unforgettable adventure. I know I will spend as many days as I possibly can out there until ice out and I hope to see some of you out there.
Good luck!!!!!
