Mississippi River Fishing Report.

Ahhhhhhhh! Feels good to be back in the boat again after the lay-off during the worst of the cold weather. I icefish but only reluctantly as a day in the boat on the Mississippi River is the cure for what ails me... each to their own right?! I'll take a leather boat seat over a 5 gallon bucket anyday!
Anyway, with this warmer weather walleyes and saugers are really on the chew right now on the river near Red Wing. Big numbers and great average size for those that didn't let their boat get snowed under behind their garage back in December...LOL
25'-28' feet seems to be about the magic depth range mid-day but you'd better work shallower early and late in the day or risk missing out on your best chance at the bigger walleyes that feed along the edges of the sandflats in 12' of water or so.
I've just about given up on the use of livebait with the willingness of the fish to smack plastic shad bodies or twister tails but the good old fireball and fathead willl take tons of fish.
I do notice a marked improvement in size and quantities once I stop reaching for the minnows so give that a try the next time out on the river.
Good fishin',
