A Real Mille Lacs Fish Story
By Lisa G
December 27, 2000 was an exciting day for a couple of anglers from Stillwater, Minnesota! Mike and Kerry had been fishing in a rental house out of Fisher's Resort for a couple of days with not much to brag about. Not until December 27, at about 10:00 a.m., that is. They were discussing whether or not they should head to shore for breakfast when the bobber went down.
At first they thought it was another little perch taking the bait until Mike felt something big on the line. This unexpected fish was a lunker! They could hardly believe it! (Especially since it bit on the snowman jig with a tiny crappie minnow!)
Mike positioned himself for battle, hoping that this one wouldnıt get away.
He started reeling up the line and discovered the drag wasnıt working. ³Oh NO,² he thought, ³this fish is going to be a tricky one to land, if the line doesnıt break!² Just as Mike started fighting the monster, there was a knock at the fish house door...it was a DNR officer making his rounds.
Kerry told the officer to come on in. Meanwhile, Mike reeled and reeled, then let out the drag by hand. He was determined! The DNR officer patiently waited in the corner with his measuring board in hand.
Finally, after a tense ten minutes, the fish appeared at the hole.....it was a WALLEYE!! Mikeıs pulse quickened as he reached into the hole to grab the prize. Once lifted onto the fish house floor, Kerry realized the whopper was barely hooked in the lip! He easily unhooked the tiny jig and everyone breathed a sigh of relief!
The DNR Officer measured the beauty: 28 1/2 inches......A KEEPER!! It weighed nine and a half pounds.
The fish will be mounted and placed on Mikeıs wall. A prize to remember!
