Opener stared off great this year we had a late ice off and the big fish were still in the current areas. The ice came off the lakes with a day or two to spare for opener. My first group of the year was my new Romanian friends from Chicago Staying at Timber Lodge. On Sunday morning we woke up to a few inches of snow and portaged into Basswood lake. The water temps were from about 43 to 44 degrees. We got into some nice fish right away and stayed on them the whole day. The big fish of the day was a 28.5 inch walleye caught by Olvi SR. We had a number of fish over 20inches. All of the big walleyes we caught were released! I attached a few pictures of some of the walleyes. The fish were in 17-23 FOW. We used lindy rigs and jigs tipped with fathead and rainbow minnows.
The next few days we fished on the White Iron chain and The great fishing continued. We fished current areas as well. We caught Walleyes in 13 to 22 FOW. We used lindy rigs with minnows with fluorescent green floating jig heads. The water temps on White Iron and Farm lake were about 44 to 46 degrees. Congratulations to One of my Romanian friends Mitch caught and released a 45 inch pike!
Late in the Week my next Group from the Twin Cities was Rich Brevik, Mike Bennett and Chad Hoffman who also stayed at Timber Lodge. We portaged into Basswood lake for a day of Pike fishing. We found water from 46 degrees in the main lake to 51 degrees in the shallows. We set up for pike and had some action right away. After a number of decent size pike in the
24-36 inch range we got into some big females in the afternoon. Mike Bennett caught a 43x18.5 inch pike on a Cisco. This was followed by Chad Hoffman's 41incher! Rich Brevik also added a decent pike to make it a great day!
